Why do star fish store so much carbon?

Starfish are made mostly of calcium carbonate. Studies have shown that they are able to store about 2 % of the annual anthropogenic CO2 emissions in their bodies. It is difficult to tell what impact that these echinoderms have on atmospheric carbon levels though.
