Why do squirrels eat pine cones?

    As squirrels cannot digest cellulose and must rely on foods rich in protein, carbhhydrates and fat. In temperate regions early spring since buried nuts begin to sprout and no longer available for the squirrel to eat ther rely heavily on buds of the trees like pine cones.
