Why do space shuttles get so hot coming back to earth?

Space shuttles get so hot on the way back to Earth as a result of something called aerodynamic heating. This heating is produced when a fluid, such as air, moves across a solid body such as a meteor, missile, or spacecraft. It is a result of friction with and compression of the air it is moving.
