Why do some animals do so much better in captivity than others?

Some animals do better in captivity than others because many animals kept in zoos are born in captivity, and do not know the freedom of the wild. Many animals can be tamed, others have lower intellects and are not capable of being trained to live in captivity. Cats and dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, and tend to remain as such.
