Rechargeable batteries pose more of a threat to the environment when thrown away than do single-use batteries, so there’s more need to recycle the rechargeable batteries.  Single-use batteries are fairly safe to throw away, as they don’t contain enough harmful chemicals or toxins to offset the cost of recycling them.  Rechargeable batteries DO contain potentially toxic heavy metals inside, and pose a threat to landfills, so it’s best to recycle them.
