I’m not sure about smoke, but fires can definitely be good for certain ecosystems– especially prairies. Indeed, a big cause of prairie loss came from fire suppression. Some prairie plants need fire to germinate, and fires help replenish the prairie soil.
Fire is good for prairies and some forests. Jack pine trees need to have a fire sweep through the forest so their pine cones will open and their seeds can fall to the ground and germinate. Fires also can open up areas of ecosystems to let new plants (early successional) come in and regenerate the forest.
