Why do some houses have such tall roofs isn’t it really inefficient?

In some areas of the world a steep pitched roof may actually be more efficient than a low pitch roof. In Sweden, for example, a region known for its vernacular architecture of steep pitched roofs, this form helps buildings shed rain and snow from their extreme winters. This in turn prevents weight from building up on the roof which in turns allows the structure to be less massive, therefore increasing efficiency. Also, if well insulated, the area under the roof can serve as an excellent thermal blanket preventing cold air from penetrating into habitable spaces.
