Why do some fruits, like tomatoes and strawberries, taste bad in the winter?

Fruits like those usually do not taste as good in the winter because they are out of season. This means they cannot be grown in a region close to you at all, they are usually grown in South America. Because they have to travel so far, then wait on the grocery shelves for you to buy them, they are picked before they are mature (ripe). The grocers assume they will ripen as they travel and do not want them to be too ripe or they will spoil by the time you get them. If you try to eat more seasonally for your region, the food will always taste better. Fruits that are in season in the winter are oranges, tangerines and persimmons.
