Why do some animals eat their mates? How is this sustainable for the population?

It is common belief that the mate is eaten in order to gain nutrition or have some kind of fitness advantage, however the fact of the matter is, that it is still not known why females will cannibalize their mate. Research has shown the female gets no nutritional benefit, nor does she gain any advantage in providing for her young. Males however do benefit from the process as they increase their share in paternity and this also helps to monopolize the female ( in some species)
