Why do so many people throw their cigarette butt out the window of a moving car?

Can I call the cops and report them for attempted arson?

Simply because it is the easiest thing to do. If you put it in the ashtray, which fewer and fewer cars actually possess these days, it can leave a lingering odor in the car – which might bother passengers – and it is just another thing that will have to be cleaned out eventually if it is used.

Calling and reporting them for arson probably would not work, however, it is widely accepted that cigarette butts are littering so you may well be able to get them on that.

It’s ironic that they probably throw out the butts because they don’t want to smell them. Although this may be rude and definitely littering, it’s not classified as attempted arson. There is a law against this specifically in some states, with the penalty being a fine.

Throwing cigarette butts out of a window is actually illegal in most states.  In Texas it is even the number one cause of litter.  In my opinion, people who smoke are already showing a lack of respect for their body, so it really isn’t all too surprising when they show a lack of respect for the environment as well.

Because it’s convenient. It’s as simple as that. Unfortunately, cigarette butts are neither biodegradable nor recyclable. Someone should find a use for these. Butt-art anyone?
