Why do snakes smell so bad?

Snakes emitting odors are an evolutionary behavioral trend aimed at their prey. In past studies with snakes and mice, the odors resulted in limited motor activity in the mice. This would make them more easily susceptible to being eaten by snakes. Snakes also emit different types of odors. However, the pungent smell is probably either to ward of predators or to aid in the capture of prey.
