Why do scientists say the Panda and Dog genomes are similar? That doesn’t sound right at all. What is a genome anyways?

A genome is the complete set of DNA of an individual or species.  DNA is often compared to a blueprint for building an organism.  You have a genome too.

Bears and Dogs are considered to be evolutionarily related.  It may be that Pandas are closer to this common link than other bears.  In truth, saying that a Panda’s genome is similar to a Dog’s genome is actually not as definitive as it sounds.  Mammals have a lot of DNA in common.  Humans are believed to share about 96 percent of their DNA with Chimpanzees.
