Why do power transformers blow up?

  1. 0 Votes

Transformers transfer energy between multiple circuits, changing the voltage in the meantime.  If there a surge, a flooding of too much energy, it can lead a transformer to explode.  Most transformers are designed to sense a flood in energy, but it can take 60 milliseconds to shut down after the detection which may seem like a very short amount of time, but not always short enough.  Corroded wires have been known to cause explosions as well.
