Why do plants do so well in greenhouses?

The walls of greenhouses trap the heat from sunlight.  The moisture in a greenhouse, caused by plant respiration or watering, also helps retain heat.  This is similar to how a cloudy sky will cause nights to be warmer than a clear sky, because the heat from the ground is trapped by the cloud layer.
