Why do pine trees lose pine needles?

The seeds are in the pine cone not the needles.

Pine needles are infact the leaves of the pine trees. They are leaves that are so tightly rolled up that they appear in the shape of a needle. Just like leaves of other trees, when the leaf dies or is damaged and can no longer assist in photosynthesis, the leaf falls off, allowing new leaves to form.
