Why do people’s stomachs hurt when they are hungry?

Hunger pains generally occur when someone has not consumed any food for a few hours.  They are caused by muscle contractions, a feeling which is generally described as unpleasant and sometimes painful.  Generally, eating a small snack will relieve hunger pains.

People with low blood-sugar may experience hunger pains when glucose levels have dropped too much.

In rare cases, hunger pains may be an indicator of a more severe gastrointestinal disorder.
