Why do people say octopi are so smart?

Octopuses are more intelligent than any other invertebrate. They have both short and long-term memory, and there is speculation that all octopus behavior patterns are learned independently and not inherent or instinctual. They can be trained to distinguish between shapes and patterns and apparently practice observational learning. They have craft food-searching skills: sometimes breaking out of their own aquarium and into others in search of their next meal. Also, it is hypothesized that some of their behavior is similar to play behavior.
