The fin of the shark is so lucrative that harvesting the rest of the shark is a waste of time. In many Asian countries Shark Fin Soup is an absolute delicacy. At 500 dollars per pound of fin, these ancient creatures are being over fished. It is a sad affair both ethically and for sustainability reasons. These sharks are thrown back into the ocean still alive when their fins are cut off. Unable to swim or filter oxygen through their lungs they sink to the bottom and die either through suffocation or being eaten by other animals. It is a cruel and terrible practice that, in addition to other shark uses, claims the lives of between 30 and 100 million sharks per year.
