people always say they care for the planet but they never do
There are a lot of reasons people don’t recycle. Aldo Leopold suggests in A Sand County Almanac that more education is necessary and that it must be in people’s best interests to do the right thing for the environment.
In other words, imposing on people’s good will is not always going to be successful because people are not going to give up their lifestyles for nothing. There will always be the people that will, just because it’s good for the environment, but the majority of people will not.
Some people are simply lazy and can’t be bothered. They don’t see the benefit for them and it’s much easier just to chuck something in the trash.
For others, they would recycle if it was easier, but it’s inconvenient and they have to go out of their way, so they don’t. (For example, in my town, you have to drive over a half an hour to reach a recycling center. That’s pretty hard!)
Many people do not believe that recycling is necessary and/or don’t understand why recycling helps.
This is why it is important to continue to educate your community on the necessity and benefits of recycling. Starting recycling programs that make it as easy as possible for people to recycle is even better. Incentive programs may be the most effective (paying people to recycle), but are more difficult to sustain.
