People dream for many reasons and sleep has been studied extensively. Dreaming can be seen as a way for people to organize their thoughts from the day and it also helps with memory. Sleep also helps with learning and retaining information acquired during the day, dreaming can be seen as aiding in the organization of that information. REM sleep (the stage of sleep you are in when you dream) allows for parts of the brain that control emotions, social interaction, and decision making to relax and recuperate after each day. Dreaming helps mood and it helps the body gain a feeling of restedness. Sleeping also helps your immune system stay strong and your nervous system to stay effective and alert in the day time. Also, sleep is essential to growth and development, because during sleep your body releases hormones that help physical and mental development.
