Why do outdoor lights glow orange?

    Most outdoor lighting systems use sodium-vapor lamps. As the sodium-metal vaporizes it emits a yellowish light. The wavelength of light produced is in the yellow band of the color spectrum, thus giving the lights the yellow-orange cast at night.
