[img_assist|nid=194119|title=Map of Taiwan|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=72]There are at least two answers to this question. First of all, Taiwan is composed of one small main island as well as an archipelago as well as many other smaller islands which surround it. By definition, almost everyone who lives in Taiwan will be relatively close to coast, simply because of geography.
However, many of Taiwan’s major cities, including capital Taipei, dot Taiwan’s coasts. Like many world cities, these urban centers and ports developed because of their proximity to waterways. Furthermore, inland Taiwan is rugged and characterized mainly by steep mountains and volcanoes, which generally attract fewer residents than do coastal urban centers.
