Republicans represent their states and sometimes my Republicans represent states whose economy is sometimes driven by coal and other dirty energy- they try to keep any type of regulation that would have an effect on their economy to a minimum, or in our case nearly non-existent. When the Bush administration was in power Vice President, Dick Cheney, pressured the head of the EPA, Christine Todd Whitman, to lower air quality standards– but thankfully that was overruled in court, because it was said to violate the Clean Air Act.

If you look back throughout the history of the EPA (whose head director is appointed by the president) many of the times they have ties to coal and oil, so with that one might think that they have their own interests at hand.

So it is a combination of dirty energy and personal interest for profit that make many republicans veer away from environmental regulation.
