From what I can glean from various discussion boards the consensus seems to be that the coloring is a result of diet. Scallops, flamingos and a variety of other critters change color depending on their diet. Rumor has it that the lingcod who eat krill and shrimp turn a deep blue color.
I just caught another pair of ling cod five minutes apart and fifty feet from one another that were the same age. One was wide and light tan colour and one was peacock blue and skinny. I’ve caught lots of these guys and I think it’s genetic.
