Why do LED lights use less energy?

LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) are extremely more efficient than conventional bulbs; they do not have a filament, so they do not burn out, and they do not produce unwanted heat.  They function purely by movement of electrons in a semiconductor.  2 to 10 watts of electricity are needed to power an LED bulb.
