Mother Nature makes sure that children love sweet things right from the start. We’re biologically programmed for this because a mother’s breast milk is sweet–just like candy, it contains sugar! As we get older, our taste buds change, but until then, it’s best to sweeten the non-sweetening foods like vegetables so that they are more attractive to children. Making non-sweet foods fun is also another alternative; nothing like a frozen green bean for a Popsicle substitute!
new small-study research from the University of Washington finds a direct link between kids’ sweet tooth and growth patterns. Kids aged 11-15 were given increasingly sweet solutions to guzzle and rate for preference. Kids who also showed a high level of a chemical associated with bone growth tended to go for the sweeter drinks. The sweeter, the better.
