Why do kids get lumps of coal if they are bad?

I don’t know anyone personally who has received a lump of coal for Christmas if they are bad but it’s a superstition to encourage kids to behave well. The logic is, if you’re a good child then Santa Claus will give you the toys that you desire but naughty kids get dirty, dingy coal. For children, coal is undesirable, and this tradition comes from a time where coal wasn’t the limited resource it is now. There is a doctor who is now encouraging Santa to give seaweed to naughty children because it’s Santa’s turn to now go green.
