Why do incandescent light bulbs create a lot of heat?

Because the electricity is converted into heat in the tungsten wire in the bulb.  90% of the electricity they produce is heat and only 10% is light.  On the other hand, fluorscent bulbs use 40% of the electricity to produce light.  If you are considering switching to CFL bulbs, I would highly suggest doing so.  Many people complain of the hospital-like white light they produce, but as CFL’s have become more popular manufacturers have designed bulbs that emit a “soft-white” light.
