Hummingbirds have a rapid breathing rate and heartbeat, as well as a naturally high body temperature. They must feed every ten minutes or so throughout the day, and sugary nectars and tree sap make up a major part of the hummingbird’s diet because they provide the birds with easily digestible carbohydrates that are converted to energy. Hummingbirds also need protein to keep their muscles strong, and they get this from eating insects and pollen.
