Why do hummingbirds eat sugar water?

A hummingbird requires an adequate diet of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Nectar is a dilute solution of sugars with trace amounts of amino acids and electrolytes. These sugars are easily digested and quickly converted into energy, supplying a hummingbird’s carbohydrate requirements.
