Why do electronics have a standbye mode?

Many electronics go into a stand-by mode because they perform functions even when powered down. For example DVD players or cable boxes display the time. Something like a TiVo benefits from a stand by mode because it needs to be on all the time to record programs. Computer stand by modes should only be used if you plan on returning to the computer in the next few hours. If not, it’s best to shut it down all the way and unplug it. Stand by modes are mainly used to allow products to run certain systems without being entirely powered up. As consumers we need to be aware of these modes and careful not to abuse them.
