Not always. Granite slab can be cut with a standard household skill saw fitted with a continuous diamond cutting blade. It is however recommend to use a diamond wet saw or waterjet saw.
Water is necessary sometimes to cool down the blade of the saw that granite cutters use, because the blades get very hot as they are spun to cut through the rock. Another use for water in granite cutting in water-jet cutting technology, in which a jet of water is propelled out of a machine at such a high pressures that it incises a pattern in the granite. The water travels out of the machine at about three times the speed of sound!
