Frogs absorb oxygen through their skin. Their skin is covered with mucous glands that require hydration, so frogs won’t stray far from water. If their skin dries up they can’t absorb oxygen properly.
The reason that most species of frogs and toads need to stay in the water is because their skin is porous and can dry out easily if it does not come in contact with water. Also, often these animals lay their eggs in water, therefore they reside in moist, damp habitats, and areas that has close access to water.
