Firstly, the elderly are often recommended to get vitamin D supplements because they are generally not often exposed to the conditions that create vitamin D, and the body itself will produce less vitamin D in the sun. The elderly often spend much time inside, or with more of their body covered with clothing.
Not getting enough vitamin D is especially dangerous for elders because vitamin D assists with the absorption of calcium. Older people often have weakened or brittle bones, and they need to be able to absorb calcium in order to prevent breakages. There is also some evidence that a vitamin D deficiency might lead to muscle weakness, which can lead to falls and dangerous mishaps.
