Why do the dominant gorillas turn grey?

The grey coloration on dominant male gorillas is actually something that happens to all male gorillas by the time they reach about 12 years of age. Almost any gorilla that manages to become the dominant male in a troop will be at least that old, so these males are almost “silverbacks.” However, male gorillas of the same age also have this coloration, even if they have not become the dominant males of a troop.
