Why do domestic cats present dead birds and mice to their owners? Why don’t they just eat them?

Cats are natural hunters. They bring back their prey because they are fulfilling this hunter urge. Also, mother cats bring back dead or dying prey to teach their kittens to hunt. Since domestic cats think of their humans as part of the family, they may be trying to teach you to hunt or sharing the bounty.
