Why do crocodiles sit on the top of the water with their mouths open?

A crocodile leaving its mouth open helps the crocodile to cool off, similarly to a dog panting. The mouth being open also allows the plover, or crocodile-bird, access to pick parasites out of the crocodile’s mouth and clean its teeth.
