Why do cows produce so much methane?

Because we are feeding them in a method that is not conducive for proper digestion. Cows are ruminants, they have four stomachs for processing primarily grass and other plant material. Most feedlot cows are fed corn, soy, and waste products. Their digestive system is not designed to handle this high-calorie, low-fiber diet. They are unable to properly break down this food and much of it ferments in the cows’ digestive tracts, contributing to large amounts of methane being released.

As stated in this previous answer, oregano supplements have been proven to reduce methane gas from cows by 40 percent.
