Why do clocks turn the way they do?

Clocks were designed based on the original timepiece, the sundial. Clocks were first built in the northern hemisphere, and in order for a horizontal sundial to work, it had to be placed facing southward. As the sun moved from east to west, the shadow created would move in the same rotational direction.

Thanks heelgirl! I had no idea why the clock was designed the way it was. Figured it was an inventive measure 😉
