There are several reasons it’s difficult to breed cheetahs in captivity. One is a very small gene pool (in wild cats nearly or equally as much as captive ones), and therefore a high incidence of mutations and low fertility. Another is what the breeders at the Smithsonian call “behavior nuances,” which may include female cheetahs’ notorious fussiness when it comes to picking mates.
