Why do fires cause land slides the first rain after?

If a wildfire burns an area that is on a hill, once the plants are burned and dead from the flames, the roots die too. when the next rain comes, the water can overwhelm the land and the dead roots do not hold the land together as well, contributing to an increase in land slides once the fire has passed through a hilled area.
