One reason is psychological–when people see that there is a waitlist, it makes the car seem rarer or harder to come by, and it seems as though this is for a good reason (quality, price, etc.). This can increase both publicity and popularity for the vehicle. The list also helps manufacturers know what quantities to produce of the vehicle before they start shipping it out. Also, the car companies can see where the greatest demand for a car is (cities and zip codes), which can help them target marketing efforts towards where this demand is concentrated. In addition, the waitlist can help distribute vehicle sales in a more orderly fashion if supplies are limited.
