Cacti are succulent (water retaining) plants that have evolved to adapt to harsh dry climates. Their leaves turned into spines that protect the cactus and provide shade. They have thicker bodies with water retentive in the optimal shape for water storage and they have shallow roots close to the surface to better collect water with.
