The species of bats that are most killed by wind turbines are migratory tree bats, suggesting that the turbines are in their flight path or are confused with potential roosting places. Unfortunately, the reason why so many bats are falling victim to the turbines remains a mystery but there are studies being conducted to solve this problem. Bats are killed either by being struck by the rotating blades or their lungs are burst by the change in pressure that occurs around the blades.
Wind farms in the US are working to alleviate the pain inflicted on the bats by shutting off the turbines when wind speeds are low, generally at night, which is when bats are present.
