why do ants like sugar so much?

Simply, it gives the ants lots of energy. The worker ants that go out and find food need to feed the entire colony and sugar is a great high-energy source that is easily ingested by most organisms for fuel. Ants are attracted to other foods, but sweet foods are the easiest to recognize as having needed energy.

One type of ant has such a proclivity for sugar that it has become known as the “sugar ant”. This is Camponotus consobrinus, the banded sugar ant, an ant that can be found in all parts of Australia.
