Why do ants protect aphids?

The relationship between a few ant species and aphids is called ‘symbiotic’ or mutual beneficial. There are hundreds of symbiotic relationships between different species out there, and this one is a great example. Aphids excrement, called “honeydew” is a sugary liquid that serves as a food source for the ants, who in turn protect the aphids and the aphid eggs as if they were domestic livestock. They protect the aphids to ensure their food supply continues.
