Without carbon, life as we know it wouldn’t exist. Carbon is a component of all organic molecules, including our genetic material, and is unique in its ability to bond itself and almost any other molecule. Because of this, carbon is a part of nearly 10 million chemical compounds, and is an essential part of all life on Earth.
