Why do Americans think that recycling is so hard?

One of the difficult challenges we face with recycling is that people are not used to the concept of separating materials before releasing them to the waste stream. We have become accustomed to the destructive habit of throwing things away and never having to think about them again. This convenience makes any different mode of operation (recycling) seem like a challenge more so than it is: old habits are hard to break. In addition, many people are confused about what is and is not recyclable, as there are a wide variety of materials produced in America and similarly many different operations for recycling them. Becoming educated on the options takes time and effort.
