It’s not that we don’t care about the environment, as many people do raise concerns. However, I believe it’s a mix of misinformation and tradition. A lot of Americans are not properly informed about what activities or products are the most wasteful, or on how to properly recycle, or on what exactly it means to be organic. I think people see the ‘organic’ or ‘green’ label and just assume it’s helping the environment when companies may greenwash or find loopholes.
Furthermore, similar to how Japan still continues whaling, it’s an ingrained mindset in America to be wasteful, as a capitalistic society has the unfortunate side effect of excess in those who succeed within the system. While people are starting to understand the importance of preserving the environment, it takes time to change a way of life.
