Why do alligators end up in sewers?

Most accounts of alligator sightings in urban areas – namely, New York City – are fictitious.  Rumors of these alligator sightings spread in the 1920’s and 1930’s.  Legend has it that rich families from New York would vacation in Florida and bring back baby alligators  as pets for their children, and then when the alligators grew too big, they would flush them down the toilet, and hence they ended up in the sewers.  There are some actual accounts of small alligators (Caimans imported from South America) being spotted in storm drains and sewers, but scientists say that the cold environment would not be suitable for alligators to reproduce.
